First blog post for the new year! A few snapshots of the fireworks display from the Skytower in Auckland, the amazing sunrise from Eastern Beach and of course the New Year’s Eve dinner at Faro – Korean BBQ on Lorne Street (no fivepointdusk post is that complete without some snippet of food). 2013 will be a year of great change for me, so here’s to courage, strength and happiness. Wish you all the very best for twenty-thirteen! Enjoy, and of course eat delicious food!

Mexico

I just couldn’t stay in on such a wonderful summer’s day, so after a good sleep-in, my friends and I went to try out Mexico down at Britomart for some new and refreshing food. A lot of shops are in fact closed in New Zealand over the Christmas and New Years period so it was a relief that Mexico was open. Starving, we ordered two soft shell tacos each, of pork, beef and chicken as well as a carafe of Margarita to share. Between the chicken and the beef, the chicken I thought was brilliant, it has a lot less ingredients but was wonderfully done. The tostaditas is a must try! I loved the atmosphere of the place.

Franklin Road – Ponsonby

I thought I’ll do a quick post with some of the photos I took of the Christmas lights along Franklin Road in Ponsonby before the Christmas vibe wears down for the year. A bunch of friends and I walked along the busy street on a weekday leading up to Christmas Day. The atmosphere was amazing with people singing carols inside the houses and families, couples and friends all talking animatedly, enjoying their time as they walked along admiring and snapping away at the bright lights. A lot of the decorations really reflected the summer Christmas we have here in New Zealand, the day was particularly humid so there wasn’t a need for warm drinks and thick coats to accompany us through the night, like what one would usually associate with Christmas on the other side of the world.

Atomic Coffee

New North Road seems to be littered with an incredible amount of casual dining, bars, cafes, restaurants and the odd treasure shop. The trip to Atomic Coffee was primarily solely for purchasing my mum’s Christmas present: a syphon. From the photos you can tell we were obviously sold on the interior and atmosphere, we had to stay for a quick drink… or a bite or two as well…

I confess I am not a true coffee drinker and cannot tell you how the Cold Brew fared. The pancakes were on the burnt side but nothing that the passionfruit ricotta and pistachio could not save.

Sunny days call for some ice cream too!

Frasers

Sorry to have been MIA recently, work, Christmas functions and celebrations with friends have been keeping me busy. I hope it has been a wonderful festive season for you all. I have been keeping a list of places I want to try and will hopefully be ticking them off soon with many more blog posts scheduled.

Frasers is a long time favourite of mine and a very popular cafe nestled in Mt Eden which is frequented by both locals and tourists alike. I do have to say that they aren’t as good as they were before popularity hit but take note: their cakes never fail. A trip over especially for the abundant cabinet of glorious delights is always worth it. (You’ll find the place packed with sweet tooth-ers most nights and late afternoons.)

Mt Eden really reflects the kiwi culture with numerous cafes, small boutiques, opshops and craft fairs along the main street. We also made a quick stopover on the way home to Cornwall Park as the weather was just too good to pass.

Coffee club – Sylvia Park

Christmas time soon!

IMG_2690

Coffee Club is a mess. They used to be a decent and easy go-to spot whenever I visited Sylvia Park, close to the cinema and great for having lunch in-between shopping. My visit this time round has really put me off however. The service, or rather the lacking of, was appalling. The tables were a mess. The cutlery was a mess. The food was a mess. The drink was a mess. I hardly think I am being demanding here when all I needed was to have a cleanly wiped table, the waitress to have some memory of what I asked for and plates and cutlery that were not still wet. The food we ordered included Cajun Chicken with some very limp salad leaves and a strawberry smoothie that didn’t have enough taste in it. Having said all this I still love their potato wedges, and possibly their salmon and cream cheese sandwich – though i can’t say for sure because I haven’t tried it in a while. It can be fair to say though that I won’t be back in sometime.

tree

First day of December! Me and my sister (Two Sips After) pulled out the old family christmas tree and spent the night decorating it. The tree is even older than me and falling apart but nonetheless adds much joy and colour into our home. Can’t wait to start piling up presents underneath. Have a wonderful December everyone and enjoy the many season celebrations! 🙂
